When the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring first came out in 2001 I was so captivated by the imagery, music and art, that after just short of three hours of screen time that I actually wanted the film to keep going for another three hours.
After the three films of the trilogy were released and finally the extended version of The Return of the King was released in 2004, I was saddened more than I thought I would have been; for the last release of the trilogy meant that it was finally over.   The Harry Potter series has filled the decade with new and wonderful fantasy imagery but there was something about the history that J. R. R. Tolkien had dreamed up in Middle-earth and the actual history of the novels that were written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II and generations have held these stories close to their hearts.
