Chatwin at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival

Justin Chatwin (born October 31, 1982) is a Canadian film actor , best known for playing the son of Tom Cruise's character in the Steven Spielberg -directed War of the Worlds , for his leading role in the 2007 Mystery/Thriller The Invisible and his role as Goku/Oozaru in Dragonball Evolution . In 2011, he began playing Steve in the Showtime series Shameless .

Chatwin was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, to an artist mother and an engineer father.   He was raised Catholic.

As well as War of the Worlds and The Invisible , his other film roles include the independent film The Chumscrubber , Taking Lives , Dragonball: Evolution (Anime fans freaked out for this film but I have never really found any anime that I have liked and I have tried. The last Anime I did enjoy was Robotech, however that was when I was nine and living over seas.I just liked Chatwin's hair in Dragonball: Evolution) and the Canadian film Funkytown .

Chatwin as Goku in Dragonball

In the 2005 version of War of the Worlds , director Steven Spielberg took the classic tale of alien invasion to the screen for a third time.   In this version, instead of a scientist, Tom Cruise's character was a normal guy who happens to know a lot of useful information and is a divorced Dad played who is on the surface not willing to get that involved with his kids and is forced to run a crash course in their needs medically and emotionally.

Chatwin's character of the brother to Dakota Fanning embrace after Fanning could not find him. Panicking, Fanning screams as she thought that Chatwin had abandoned her to be alone (implying that being left with their father is being left alone.

As the older brother (Chatwin) proves his maturity and dwarfs his father's in knowing how to and having the will to anything to protect his younger sister and be the parent when Cruise's character falters, the relationship between Chatwin's character as Tom Cruise's character's son and Dakota Fanning's character as Cruise's daughter showed Spielberg's further theme of the distant or non present father.

Think of E.T . as the recently divorced mom gets upset when her son (played by Henry Thomas (later in Legends of the Falls with Brat Pitt ) mentions his dad and a deathly silence fills the room.   Thomas's character then walks outside into his backyard where he meets an alien.

When his parents split up, Spielberg thought of what would he like to happen to take his mind off   the emotional damage of a family splitting up.   Meeting an alien in his backyard was one of his favorite fantasies.

Chatwin's character comforting his younger sister (Fanning) after they just mauled outside of a trashed family diner as the word was coming to an end where with their estranged father (Cruise) in a booth where in a better time seemingly normal families sat bonding.
Chawin in Taken

In addition, Chatwin has been in several television shows, including the miniseries, Taken (two episodes in 2002, and the sci-fi series later had War of the Worlds co-star Dakota Fanning ) and Lost (one episode in 2006 with Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan ).

He played the gay son of Kevin Nealon's character on the Showtime comedy series Weeds pilot. He also plays Steve in the 2011 Showtime drama series Shameless , adapted from the original British show of the same name created by Channel 4.

The Invisible
When The Invisible was released, my sister in law, who enjoys suspense fantasy (ala Stephen King in genre films) approached me and wanted to recommend the film.   She knows that I am a sci-fi / fantasy or anything I can escape into a film genre, and pulled me aside and asked have you heard of The Invisible (that is the 2007 film not the British band.)   I said I had seen a few ads and was interested.   She smiled and said that I should see it the main character is right up my alley.   Not being Canadian, I can only think of something more personal.   She was right. :)
